College Station began around Texas A&M University. The college was inaugurated in 1876 and was Texas’ first state institution of higher education. The college was very isolated, and therefore school administrators began to provide facilities for those associated with the university. The college’s campus quickly became the focal point of the community. College Station derived its name from a train station that was located near the college’s campus, and was officially incorporated in 1938.
