College Station is located in central Texas in Brazos County. College Station is the largest city in the metropolitan area, called home to over 67,000 people. Located only 100 miles away from Houston and Austin, and 160 miles from Dallas and San Antonio, College Station is literally in the center of all the action, deep in the heart of Texas. College Station is the home to the third largest public university in the nation, Texas A&M University. Texas A&M is a member of the Big XII Conference and a major research institution, which attracts many different cultures and nationalities to College Station. If you are looking for a diverse atmosphere full of tradition and spirit, College Station is the place for you. Because of the size of Texas A&M University, in 2006 Money Magazine named College Station as the most educated city in Texas and the 11th most educated city in the United States.


College Station History

TAMU CampusCollege Station began around Texas A&M University. The college was inaugurated in 1876 and was Texas’ first state institution of higher education. The college was very isolated, and therefore school administrators began to provide facilities for those associated with the university. The college’s campus quickly became the focal point of the community. College Station derived its name from a train station that was located near the college’s campus, and was officially incorporated in 1938.


Colege Station Parks and Recreation

College Station ParkThe College Station Parks and Recreation Department began in 1971 and has since created over 50 parks, provided athletic fields and facilities, playgrounds, ponds, nature trails, pools, a conference center, recreation center, teen center, an outdoor amphitheatre and rental facilities. The College Station Parks and Recreation Department is a nationally accredited agency. They strive to provide safe facilities and educational programs that appeal to all of College Station’s residents regardless of age, ability, beliefs, social background and education. The Park Department also offers a series of free family concerts at Wolf Pen Creek Amphitheater in conjunction with College Station Utilities.

College Station Local Events

College Station is an active community and always has something exciting going on. Whether you are interested in music, culture, or history, College Station has events all year round aiming to please those of all ages. BioBlitz
BioBlitz is hosted by the College Station Parks and Recreation Department and Texas A&M University. BioBlitz takes place each spring and is focused on educating and exposing youth to the diversity in Brazos Valley, along with conservation methods and wildlife studies. Come take part in nature investigation hikes, the activity centers, displays, and wildlife exhibits.

Martin Luther King Celebration
The Martin Luther King Celebration takes place every year and is a two hour long community musical celebration. The celebration commemorates Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., his life, and legacy. Every year the celebration hosts a guest speaker, local spiritual choirs and more.

College Station EventsStarlight Music Series
The Starlight Music Series is a concert series that takes place each spring and summer. All Starlight Music Series events are free to the public. The Starlight Music Series takes place at The Wolf Pen Creek Amphitheater.

The George Bush Presidential Library and Museum
The George Bush Presidential Library and Museum gives residents and visitors of College Station the opportunity to experience the life and Presidency of George and Barbara Bush.

College Station AttractionsBenjamin Knox Gallery
Benjamin Knox is one of the most well known artists in College Station. He is specifically known for his paintings of traditions and memories at Texas A&M University. Benjamin Knox opened the 1900 College Station Train Depot in October of 2001, which is a replica of the original train depot for the Texas A&M University. The Depot also houses his artwork as well as other art from the Brazos Valley.

The Children’s Museum of the Brazos Valley
Here at The Children’s Museum of the Brazos Valley, children are invited to come learn and play through fun and educational exhibits. Volunteers help make fun activities possible, such as storytelling, pottery, and art.

Texas A&M Sports Museum
The Texas A&M Sports Museum is located in the Bernard C. Richardson Zone at Kyle Field. The Texas A&M Sports Museum preserves the history of all varsity sports at the university.
